Vedic astrology is often read as fortune-telling, but its Sanskrit name, Jyotish, means “the light.” It is a system for seeing life’s patterns more clearly, including the timing in which those patterns tend to unfold.
Jyotish as a roadmap
Swami Aditya describes the purpose of astrology this way:
“With this vision of cosmic powers you know what is your karma, past karma, what is your present karma and what will be the future karma. So when you make your roadmap and then you can see that whether this road is good for me or it is having a lot of obstacles.” (00:16:42–00:17:06)
The image is practical. A roadmap does not drive the car for you. It simply shows where the road is smooth, where it narrows, and where you may need to slow down.
Dashas and the seasons of life
One of the key timing tools in Jyotish is the dasha, a planetary period that highlights certain themes for a span of years. Like the seasons, dashas do not force events. They make particular qualities more available: discipline, expansion, reflection, or release.
Knowing your dasha is less like receiving a command and more like checking the weather. You still choose how to dress and when to travel, but you do it with your eyes open.
Reading timing, not forcing outcomes
The value of astrology is that it can prepare the mind. When a difficult period appears, you are less likely to panic. When a supportive period appears, you are less likely to waste it. In both cases, the chart is a tool for reflection, not a replacement for judgment.
If you are curious about your own timing, the source interview is a good place to begin, and the articles on karma and meditation offer companion perspectives.
