Vedic astrology, or Jyotish, can look intimidating. Charts full of planets, houses, signs, and Sanskrit terms make it seem like a closed system only experts can read. But at its root, Jyotish is a language for mapping time, temperament, and tendency. It is not a verdict.
Jyotish means “the light”
Swami Aditya explains the meaning of the word itself:
“Jotish means in astrology in India it’s called Jotish means it is the light of God, cosmic power. When you have eyes you can see the world but when you don’t have a vision how you will see the world? With this vision of cosmic powers you know what is your karma, past karma, what is your present karma and what will be the future karma. So when you make your roadmap and then you can see that whether this road is good for me or it is having a lot of obstacles.” (00:16:26–00:17:14)
In this view, astrology is less about prediction and more about perspective. It gives a map so that you can travel with your eyes open.
Planets as fields of influence
The Vedic tradition does not see planets as gods issuing orders. It sees them as part of a larger energetic environment:
“The planets are nothing but they are some electromagnetic field. Planetary has some effect and this is our mind, okay, this is our brain… when these gravitational force comes and attract, it creates some kind of force or sensory impulses.” (00:51:08–00:51:46)
This is a traditional metaphor, not a scientific claim. It simply says that the same cosmos outside us is also inside us, and that the two are connected.
The basic building blocks
A birth chart has several layers:
- Planets represent different functions of life: mind, action, discipline, expansion, and so on.
- Signs show the style or quality of that function.
- Houses show the area of life where that function expresses itself: work, relationships, home, spirituality.
- Nakshatras are lunar mansions that add another layer of nuance, like the emotional texture behind a planet.
- Dashas are planetary periods. They work like seasons of life: certain themes become more visible at certain times.
None of these determine what you must do. They describe the weather you are walking through.
Self-knowledge, not fate
The value of Jyotish is not that it removes your choices. It is that it helps you understand your own patterns. If you know you are entering a season of pressure, you can slow down. If you know a relationship area is emphasized, you can pay closer attention. The chart is a mirror, not a prison.
